Yuriy A. Shulev

MD, PhD, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, head of the Division of Neurosurgery, City Multidisciplinary Hospital No. 2 (Saint Petersburg), Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, I.I. Mechnikov North­Western State Medical University, Ministry of Health of Russia. Dr. Shulev is a member of editorial boards of the Russian Neurosurgical Journal named after Professor Polenov and Journal of Spinal Surgery (India); board member of St. Petersburg Association of Neurosurgeons n. a. I.S. Babchin, Russian Association of Neurosurgeons, International Association of Neurological Surgeons (Spinal Committee), North American Skull Base Society; International Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons; Honorary Life Member of the Neuro Spinal Surgeons Association of India.

Research interests: surgery for skull base tumors, spinal microsurgery, surgery for craniovertebral junction abnormalities, and surgery for cranial nerve compression. Dr. Shulev is one of the pioneers in the implementation of new neurosurgical techniques in Russia, including microvascular decompression of cranial nerves, minimally invasive procedures aimed at the elimination of neurovascular conflict in patients with facial pain, hemifacial spasm, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. In 1998, he created the ‘Institute of Trigeminal Neuralgia’ together with P.J. Jannetta. He made a significant contribution to the development of minimally invasive non­block approaches to the treatment of pain syndromes in patients with degenerative diseases of the spine. Dr. Shulev has initiated research on the diagnosis and treatment of blast injuries of the skull and brain. A concept of conditions of blast injuries has been developed on the basis of his clinical experience in the treatment and follow up of 1000 wounded patients.

Dr. Shulev has coauthored more than 400 publications.

Eight PhD/MD theses were successfully defended under his supervision

In 2013, he became a laureate of the Russian Government Prize for Science and Technology as a member of team of authors.
