Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MD, DMSc, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Head of the Fundamental Neurosurgery Department of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov, Ministry of Health of Russia; Principal Research Fellow at the Division of Emergency Neurosurgery of the N. V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine, Moscow Healthcare Department; Editor-in-Chief of the Neurosurgery journal.
Dr. Krylov’s research activity focuses on brain aneurysm surgery. His MD thesis was entitled ‘Predicting the outcome of early surgeries for ruptured brain aneurysms’ (1987), his DMSc thesis was entitled ‘Early surgical treatment of intracranial arterial aneurysms with vascular spasm and cerebral ischemia’ (1994). He also supervised studies on the treatment of arteriovenous brain malformations, hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, gunshots wounds of the central nervous system, intracranial hypertension, acute dislocation syndrome, chronic cerebral ischemia, and pharmacoresistant epilepsy; intensive care of emergency cases in neurosurgery.
These studies allowed to develop new approaches to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of emergency neurosurgical pathologies, develop and implement new methods of minimally invasive surgery for traumatic and non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhages, radically revise surgical treatment for acute dislocation syndrome. On the border between neurosurgery and resuscitation science, Dr. Krylov developed a system of intensive care for patients with intracranial hemorrhages based on current principles of evidence-based medicine. Dr. Krylov has published 446 research papers, including 25 monographs and 4 training manuals. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of a peer-reviewed journal Neurosurgery founded in 1998. He is a member of editorial boards of several Russian and international research journals.
Dr. Krylov has created a school of healthcare professionals famous for their works on emergency neurosurgery. A total of 57 PhD theses and 12 DMSc theses were successfully defended under his supervision.
Since 2007, he has been actively participating in the development of a ‘vascular’ program in Russia and performing organizational and methodological work in neurosurgical divisions in various Russian cities (Magadan, Vladivostok, Beslan, Tyumen, Novosibirsk, etc.).
Since 2002, Dr. Krylov has been supervising master classes on surgical treatment of brain aneurysms, hypertensive hematomas, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and degenerative disorders of the spine and spinal cord, intensive care in neurosurgery, surgical revascularization of the brain, and surgical treatment of epilepsy.
Dr. Krylov is a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation, thesis committees of the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine and N.N. Burdenko National Medical Research Center for Neurosurgery. He is a board member of the Association of Russian Neurosurgeons, member of both the European and International Associations of Neurosurgeons.
